What is Threads?

If you’re on Instagram, chances are you’ve heard of Threads.

And if Threads is a platform that’s totally foreign to you, we’ll break it down.

So what is Threads?

Threads is a new-ish app created to compete with X (formerly Twitter.)

Meta launched Threads on Instagram in July 2023.

A surge in users

Threads gained 70 million users within 48 hours, making it the fastest-growing social network in history by a large margin.

Following the app’s launch and initial surge in followers, it experienced a steep decline in active users, but it appears Threads is making a comeback.

In Meta’s fourth-quarter earnings report, it shared that Threads now has 130 million monthly active users.

X IS STILL THE WINNER

While Threads operates similarly to X, in that users post and share short text-based content with the option to include links, photos and videos-- don’t consider ditching your Twitter presence anytime soon.

X has 200 million *daily* active users, compared to Threads’ 130 million *monthly* active users.

X’s users spend an average of 31 minutes per day on its app, compared to Threads’ users who spend an average of 3 minutes per day on the app.

ACCESSING THREADS

Threads lives within Instagram, which can be a bit confusing for some users.

Is it Instagram or is it its own platform?

Threads is its own platform, and while you can access it within Instagram, you can also download the Threads app from your device’s app store and manage it there.

Launching the Threads app within Instagram was a genius move on Meta’s behalf.

The social metaverse company was able to offer something different (a text-based option on a visual platform) to a captive audience of users.

We’ll continue monitoring this platform’s performance.
